myUMBC Profile Sharing

Overview

myUMBC serves as a vital community platform at UMBC, enabling members to access upcoming events, news updates, and manage their profiles. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions commissioned Commonvision to create an engaging animation illustrating the functionality of Profile Sharing within myUMBC.

This collaborative endeavor involved two graphic designers, myself and my colleague Meriç, alongside three motion designers, Patch, Toni, and Talia. I helped direct the project, contributed to the storyboard and asset creation, developed a comprehensive style guide, and provided guidance throughout. The animation was uploaded to the myUMBC platform and shared on YouTube for broader accessibility.

The digital storyboard was presented to the client and approved. Every asset and its variations were then divided by me into individual Illustrator files with each layer separated and labeled. Doing so allowed the motion designers to easily divide workflow and animate characters in an isolated format before combining assets into a drafted scene. Through the animation process, I changed some scenes and assets from the digital storyboard, including the running scene background, classroom scene, and phone interface styles. Animation rounds were reviewed by me and my supervisor before client reviews.

Process

The creative process commenced with hand-drawn storyboards, crafted with pencil and paper, which were reviewed by the client. Following two rounds of insightful feedback, I transitioned to designing assets and a few style variations using Illustrator. I presented an initial style proposal to the client for approval before proceeding with a fully digitalized storyboard. Once approved, I collaborated with Meriç to digitize all assets, ensuring they matched the style proposal and created a cohesive narrative.
